Ingrown toenails occur when the nail grows into the surrounding skin (usually on the big toe), and causes redness and pain.
They are also a common cause of infection. At Doveston Health, we are extremely conscious of how painful ingrowing toenails can be which is why we offer expert care and attention to alleviate discomfort and help prevent a recurrence.
Our podiatrists will in the first instance assess the severity of the condition and subsequently agree a treatment plan that you are happy with and will work. Mild cases can possibly be managed with conservative care this usually involves regular soaking, fairly regular nail trimming and proper footwear which includes a decent toe box.
If it is a particularly bad case, there are a number of minor surgical procedures that we can apply to the affected area, these all involve removing the section of nail that has penetrated the skin and could potentially cause future complications.
Our team is also extremely good at helping prevent the problem. You may have heard of one of the many pieces of old wives tales that help cure the problem of ingrown nails or at least one that advises how to reduce your chances of having an ingrown in the first place. At Doveston Health Podiatry we can give you the right advice on things like how to actually cut your nails, the right type of footwear to buy etc.
