When weight-bearing on the foot begins, tension develops within the plantar fascia as it acts to streamline excessively tensed muscles. People with flat feet may be prone to developing plantar fasciitis if they are walking regularly or running, are overweight, have a tight Achilles tendon, are wearing worn shoes, have high arches, have a certain kind of arthritis, or have a spur of bone growth on the heel. Often mistaken for spur is the diagnosis for the condition—plantar fasciitis. A bone spur may also be present.
Heel pain is most often caused by plantar fasciitis, a condition that is sometimes also called heel spur syndrome when a spur is present. Heel pain may also be due to other causes, such as a stress fracture, tendonitis, arthritis, nerve irritation, or, rarely, a cyst. Because there are several potential causes, it is important to have heel pain properly diagnosed. A foot and ankle surgeon is able to distinguish between all the possibilities and determine the underlying source of your heel pain.
Some treatment plans for heel pain include, rest, ice treatments, stretching exercises, and anti-inflammatory medications to decrease swelling and halt pain. Also, custom orthotics can be made to relieve pressure on the heel and or support the foot in the correct position.
Extracorporeal shockwave therapy, echos the aforementioned treatments on specifically recommended for clients with a heel spur or plantar fasciitis, it is specifically a useful therapy treatment when conservative therapies have proven unsuccessful. The therapy uses non-invasive shockwaves to injure the area of the fascia that is tight, following one session, most patients report being considerably happier with the pain they are suffering with and the treatment itself generally, is quite relaxing.
