Prolapse refers to a descent of organs from their normal positions. It refers to the drooping of any of the pelvic floor organs, which includes the bladder, uterus, vagina, small bowel, and rectum.
When the tissue supporting a female pelvic organs gets weak, the pelvic organs can drop lower in the pelvis, causing a prolapse in the vagina. Pelvic organ prolapse happens commonly in women years after childbirth, after a hysterectomy, or menopause. In men, it can occur after the prostate gland is removed.
